BACK BITING-‘THE ARM OF THE DEVIL’.
SILENCE -THE KEY TOWARDS SALVATION.
MJ Mohammed Iqbal
Islam is the religion of truth and discipline and it is the embodiment of the code of life which Almighty and Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) revealed for the guidance of mankind.
"Silence is one of the important character which will take one towards salvation" Holy Prophet (PBUH) said.
When asked by one of his companion how to get salvation, Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) told "Hold your tongue. Make your house spacious and repent for your sin" and further advised "paradise is for the man who controls his tongue" and further warned that looseness of tongue and private parts are the foremost to lead men to the fire.
In his book Ihya Ulum-Id-Din, Imam Ghazzali mentioned that Jesus Christ said, "Divine service consists of eleven parts, of which nine parts are in silence". There are innumerable calamities of the tongue of which are:,Vain talk and doing no benefit, Backbiting, Flattery, False talks and oaths, Hypocrisy, Religious controversy, False deposition, Disputes and dissension, Disclosing of secretes, Sorcery, Immoral songs, Curse etc.
Moses asked: "O Lord, who is the best to thee in divine service? He said: One whose tongue does not speak falsehood, whose heart does not commit sin and whose private part does not commit fornication. The wise Luqman said to his son: O dear son, be careful of falsehood, as falsehood is tasteful like the meat of sparrow but the evil of the liar will soon be disclosed. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: If you have got four things, nothing will harm you even if you do not get worldly matters - (1) Speaking truth, (2) Keeping of trust, (3) Good conduct, and (4) Lawful food.
Hazrat Jaber said " I was in a journey with the Prophet (PBUH), He said while passing by two graves: These two persons are punished not for any great sin. One is punished for backbiting. Another is punished, as he was not accustomed to cleanse after passing calls of nature. Then he took a fresh palm branch, divined into two and fixed one to each grave and said: So long as this branch does not become dry and remains fresh, punishment will be light on them.
Back-biting is one of the worst evils which creates more troubles and keeps people hatred among themselves, and this is purely due to not keeping silence and loose of tongue."At one time, some companions sent Salman e-Farasi to the Holy prophet to get some food. The Holy Prophet sent Salman to Usama bin Zaid who looked after the kitchen of the Holy Prophet. Usama begged to be pardoned for there was nothing in the kitchen. When Salman returned without anything, the companions said that Usama was a miser and Salman also the same. Later whenthose companions appeared before him, the Holy Prophet said: 'What is the matter, I see some particles of flesh in your teeth?' They said that they had not had any animal food. The Holy Prophet said, 'It is the flesh of Salman and Usama'. This verse was revealed "Does one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? But you abhor it." [49:12]
In the presence of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) there were several instances of evil spoken which were true but which were termed as back-biting. it related to different things viz. Character, deed, sayings, religious affairs, worldly affairs, bodily parts like squint-eye, short, black. etc.
Once Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) asked "Do you know what is back-biting? The companions said: God and his Apostle know best. He said: To say what your brother does not like is backbiting". He was asked: if what I say is in my brother? He said: if it is in him, it will yet be considered as backbiting. If it is not in him, that will be slander. Once some companions said to the Holy Prophet (PBUH): He is an unfit person. The Prophet(PBUH) said: You have back-bited your brother. The companions said: O Messenger of God, we have said what is in him. He said: If what you say is not in him, it will be slander.
Hazrat Ayesha (Allah and His Prophet be pleased Her) said: "To me a woman came. When she went away, I hinted with my hand to the Prophet that she is dwarf". The Prophet (PBUH) said: "You have back-bited her".Backbiting is of these Major Sins, because it is the root of dissension and discord. It is the 'arm of the devil' responsible for spreading unpleasantness, malice and spite, and the leading cause of enmity amongst people. Holy Quran severly warns and condemns about backbiters in the following verses.:
"Surely (as for) those who love that scandal should circulate respecting those who believe, they shall have a grievous chastisement in this world and the hereafter; and Allah knows, while you do not know." [an-Nur 24:19]
"Yield thou not to any mean swearer, Backbiter, one who goes about slandering." [Al-Qalam 68:10-11]
In another sayings: 'A backbiter, if he repents, will be off the last to enter paradise, and if he does not repent, then he will be off the first to enter hell'.
Prophet Mohammad said, 'On the Day of Judgement, one will be brought before Allah and his Book of Deeds will be handed to him. In it, he will not see his good deeds (hasanaat). He will say, 'My Lord! This is my book and I do not see in it my deeds'. He is told: Your Lord neither misguides nor forgets, your deeds have all diminished as a result of you back-biting people. Then another will appear and also be given his Book of Deeds. In it he sees many deeds, so he says, 'My Lord! This is not my book, for I have not performed any of these deeds. This one is told, 'they are a result of so and so backbiting you, his deeds have been transferred to you'.
In his book Ihya Ulum-Id-Din, Imam Ghazzali mentioned that Jesus Christ said, "Divine service consists of eleven parts, of which nine parts are in silence".
