RIGHT STATUS OF WOMEN IN THE LIGHTS OF HOLY QUR'AN
MJ Mohd Iqbal
During the pre Islamic days the status of women was very worse and they were considered nothing but machine for physical pleasure only and it was termed they did not have soul at all. Islam contemplates men and women as free and equal and enjoins co-operation between the two for their mutual good.
Holy Qur'an provided the message through Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for the moral and spiritual uplift of mankind contained specific and special provisions for the betterment of the condition of woman. There are numerous passages in the Holy Qur'an which establish the equality between men and women. One of the important verses of them is : "O man kind, fear your lord who created you of a single soul, and from it (the same soul) created it mate and from the pair of them scattered abroad many men and women." [4:1]
And in another verse Holy Qur'an say "they (wives) are your garments and you (Husbands) are their garments." [2:187]
It implies that they are for mutual support, mutual comfort and mutual protection on fitting into each other as garment fits the body in respect of natural rights of husbands and wife, the Qur'an speaks "Women have rights similar to the rights against themů" [2:228]
And in another passage speaking of rights and obligations of men and women in general, Holy Qur'an says "For muslim men and women - For believing men and women, for devout men and women, for true men and women, for men and women who are patient and constant, for men and women who humble themselves, for men and women who give in charity, for men and women who fast (and deny themselves), for men and women who guard their charity, and for men and women who engage much in God's praise for them has God prepared forgiveness and great reward." [33:35]
Allama Yousuf Ali narrates "A number of Muslim virtues are specified here, but the chief stress is laid on the face that these virtues are as necessary to women as to men. Both sexes have spiritual as well as human rights and duties in and equal degree, and the future "reward" of the Hereafter, viz., Spiritual bliss, is provided for the one as for the other."
This clearly indicates equal rights for women in human history given as the same status and dignity as men in Islam.
Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) completely changed the situation completely where female child were killed & buried by cruel people and made them understand those who were having female child were blessed by Almighty. Great Imam Jamaliya Seyed Khaleel Awn Moulana El Hasaniyul Hashimiy has said "Lucky are those who beget girl children. The age of hatred of them before the advent of Islam it is already bygone. There is no male without female and no female without male."
